The ruleset is yours

Most filters make the call for you and hand you an on/off switch. Lessms hands you the engine.

Sender
Match any part of the sender address, or lead with ^ to match how it begins — ^+1900 takes a whole range, @vtext.com takes a gateway.
Sender #
Digits only, so punctuation and country-code formatting can't slip past it. List several numbers in one rule, and mark any entry with ^ to treat it as a prefix.
Contact
Matches people already in your phone's contacts, by name or by number — . covers all of them, Smith covers a family. Someone who isn't in your contacts never matches it, so an allow rule written this way protects everyone you know and nobody you don't.
Keyword
Plain text against the message body, case-insensitive. Nothing to learn — if you can type the word, you can write the rule.
Regex
Full regular expressions for when a keyword isn't enough. Always case-insensitive, and a pattern that won't compile is skipped rather than quietly breaking your filter.
IP
Give it an address or a CIDR block and it resolves the links inside a message — so a scam that rewrites its wording every week, but keeps its hosting, still gets caught.

Deny

Matches go to Junk instead of your inbox.

Allow

Matches always reach you, whatever else would have caught them.

Tag

Matches are labelled and left alone — sort without filtering.

Any rule can be inverted — ticking one box makes it match when its pattern does not, which is how "everyone in my contacts except this one number" is written as a single rule. An inverted rule still needs something to read: a message with no text, or a sender who isn't a contact, is never caught by one.

Every one of these is yours to manage. You write the rules, you tune them, you switch them off. Nothing is decided somewhere else on your behalf, and there is no list you can't read. The Rule Tester lets you try a pattern against a message right here in the browser before it ever touches your phone.

Powerful filtering, zero friction

Lessms replaces your default messaging app, giving you a clean inbox while handling all your SMS and MMS normally.

🛡️

Rule-based filtering

Six rule types across three lists — junk it, allow it, or just label it. Allow your contacts in one rule so nothing you care about is ever at risk, and invert any rule to mean its opposite.

🌐

Community rule sets

Import rules other people have already written and tested, straight from the forum or a QR code. You see the rule before it is added — never a blind install.

🏷️

Tags & folders

Make your own categories and let rules fill them. Your existing conversations get tagged too, not just new ones.

🎨

Customizable themes

Design your own look with the visual theme builder, or browse and import community-designed themes. Every color slot is customizable.

⚡

Macros

Define text expansion macros for commonly typed replies. Tab-delimited import makes it easy to bring in large macro sets.

🔍

Inbox scan

Run an on-demand scan of your existing inbox to catch spam that slipped through before you installed Lessms.

🔒

Works offline

Filtering runs entirely on your phone. It keeps working with no signal — on a plane, underground, or abroad — and there is nothing to activate on a new phone.

Folders, if you want them

If you came from Samsung Messages you had Conversation categories — folders you made yourself and filled by hand. Google Messages gives you four it chose for you, and no way to add a fifth. Lessms has tags, which do that job and then keep doing it.

By hand
Tap # in any conversation and attach a tag. A conversation can carry several at once, so you are not forced to pick the single folder it belongs in.
By rule
Any rule can tag instead of junking. Parcel notices land in Deliveries the moment they arrive, without you sorting anything. This is the part Samsung never did — its categories were manual only.
Browse
#TAGS above your message list shows every tag with a count of what is in it. Tap one to filter the list down to it, tap again to come back.
Your history
Tag existing conversations runs your tag rules backwards over everything already on the phone, so switching does not mean starting from an empty filing system.
Next phone
Tags travel in your backup and come back on restore, attached to the same conversations.

Tag names take letters, numbers and underscores, up to 30 characters — Deliveries, Work_Stuff, Kids_School. Tagging never filters anything on its own: a tagged message still arrives in your inbox exactly as it would have. It is filing, not filtering.
